“Coming from non-league is a big jump, but I’m delighted to have joined and it’ll be a good experience and hopefully this move will take me a long way.

“I was at AFC Hayes two years ago and joined Hendon, with a couple of other offers at the time. I chose Hendon and Gary McCann gave me good football down there. I’ve near enough played every game since I went there and we just missed out on promotion in the play-off final last season.

Charlie transitioned from full-back to a central defender role, following a growth spurt, Charlie re-emerge as an up-and-coming player and has since been going from strength to strength.

“At a young age, I was with Fulham and with the squad I travelled out on tours to Italy and Spain,” he continued.

“At the time, I was very small so played at right-back and that’s sort of why I didn’t get my chance. I’m now nearly 6 foot 5 inches and a centre-half, so it’s helped me out massively.

The Iron’s fifth newcomer donned an England shirt as recently as just a week ago, featuring for the Three Lion’s ‘C’ team.

“The league is going to be a massive step up for me. I’ve got to work hard and try and earn my place here. I’ve got to work hard, but I know that already.

He added: “My pre-season starts now. I’m going to make sure that I’m fit enough for the first day of pre-season.”

Best of luck to Charlie!

Matt Targett proudly received the clubs Young player of the season award at Southampton’s player awards evening on Wednesday 20th May 2015.

”Its a dream come true to win an award like this at an amazing football club” – Matt Targett

Targett has made an impressive 12 appearances in total for the first team so far, after his debut in the 2-1 win over QPR at St Marys this season.

Andrew Egford from Hampshire Collegiate school and Academy Manager Matt Hale, presented Targett with the award and explained their reasons for choosing Targett, comparing his attributes of previous players such as James Ward-Prowse.

“Once again the staff in the academy were consulted on the choice for Young Player of the Year,” he said. “We have a multi-disciplinary approach in order to be a world-class player. We consider their attitude, discipline as well as their technical performance on it. The staff work here is best seen in the players who are past winners because those players are an example of the professionalism needed. The winner of this award stands for everything that we say in the Academy. He was aged eight when he joined us, made his first-team debut last summer, represented England at Under-19, 20 and 21 and signed a contract extension at the turn of the year. He’s everything we stand for in the Academy.”
